The lecture debated the theoretical background of the corporate social responsibility (CSR) concept.

In the first part of the lecture the importance of CSR was presented. In frames of the question "Why is it important to talk about CSR today?" several large-scale corporate crimes and their impact upon society were discussed, incl. the Ford Pinto case (1968), the Bhopal case (1984), the explosion of reactor 4 of Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (1986), the crash of Enron (2001), Lehman Brothers bankruptcy (2008), Mexico Gulf spill (2010), etc. As a conclusion of those stories, the question was discussed “Why do businesses exist? What is the purpose of a business, or, in the bigger picture, any economic system?”

In the second part of the lecture the views of some very popular persons about the question “Why does business exist” were presented and confronted, incl. Milton Friedman (“The social responsibility of business is to increase its profits”), Dave Packard (“Many people assume, wrongly, that a company exists simply to make money”), Peter Drucker (“Every organization must assume full responsibility for its impact on employees, the environment, customers, and whomever and whatever it touches. That is its social responsibility.”), José Manuel Durão Barroso (“The crisis resulted, in part at least, from a failure by some businesses to understand their broader ethical responsibilities. Now all businesses must rise to the challenge.”), etc. Aristotle’s view on “economics versus chrematistics” was discussed with the students.

In the third part of the lecture, the social contract concept was presented as a set of two-way understandings that characterize the relationship between business and society. In frames of the systems theory, firms were presented as social organisms embedded in a broader social structure (their external environment) with which they constantly interact. It was underlined that it is the manner in which the social contract has been conducted, particularly on behalf of the large publicly listed corporations during the past a hundred years, that makes the issue of CSR so prominent and important nowadays. Empirical data related to the impact of these corporations upon the society as a whole was presented. The stakeholder view of the firm was introduced. Stakeholders were originally defined as “those groups without whose support the organization would cease to exist.” The list of stakeholders originally included shareowners, employees, customers, suppliers, lenders, and society. Stakeholder management was recognized as a practical tool for putting CSR into the practice of business organizations. The main steps in the stakeholder management process were presented.
